The map debate

I would personally be a strong proponent for not limiting the map. The biggest, baddest thing about RDR2 is the fact that what you can see, you can travel to.  Communities will spring up organically around cities and towns, as they did in real life. The wilds are a dangerous place for a reason. Little to no law, wildlife, etcetera. Limiting it on purpose would stifle the already grand spectacle that is the game in a non-organic way, in my humble opinion. This will also make traveling in groups so much more important. No self-respecting bandit would rob an armed wagon with a big posse escorting it.

I'm very much in favor of not limiting map size. Some players want to be heavily invested in the fantasy of the West, and that means large expanses of untouched land, danger and a lot of lonely travelling with the uncertainty of meeting others in your path who might be up to no good. Boomtowns and small cities are your shared point to connect with other potential friends and acquaintances, and many people live isolated lives.

Red Dead World will likely be at the forefront of RDR2 RP servers and I'm sure it will be very popular, and all I'm fearing is the feeling of bumping into my neighbours a bit too much, considering I plan on playing a ranching cowboy with a few friends.

The one important factor that could change my mind is whether or not there's going to be NPCs and animals in the world to give it some presence, or if it's all going to be a barren landscape like GTAW. Even then, Saint Denis is alright and all, and I'm sure it'll have a lot of defenders who are into social RP, but not seeing at least part of the western part of the map in a Wild West game for me would be a dealbreaker.

I also support that the map is not limited, but I think it is convenient that at first it is limited to certain areas to offer users the opportunity to join with other players and not be lost in such a wide world as soon as they enter.

An idea would be, for example, to open larger and larger parts of the map so that the map is enlarged without losing sight of the community and so that they do not disappear in all directions.

That's my opinion in this whole topic, that it is limited at the beginning and that it extends over time until there is no limit left.

Remember that the whole map WILL BE OPENED - We're talking about scripting areas and housing.

My opinion based on the game, and that I love Valentine, would be this:

I can agree with that for starters, but I'd be sad to not see at least Armadillo scripted, as it's pretty much the stereotypical Western movie town.

Very much prefer New Austin or Great Plains personally but the points being made for Saint Denis and Lemoyne are pretty good, good blend of city rp and wilderness rp.

Map:

It's a given that Saint Denis NEEDS to be one of the scripted areas. It has plenty of areas for housing, bars, police departments, trains and no doubt many jobs here and there. It's an area where people will naturally gravitate towards when they want to interact with people.

@Nervous choice has my interest the most as it allows for a lot of variety. Three towns and one city means that there can be a lot of choices when it comes down to what people want to do with their characters. I do however understand if that amount of area is a lofty goal and starting smaller is more realistic.

With the whole map being open, I see no problem with only scripting a few towns. If anything, you'll have players moving away in groups to try and settle new towns and that just creates amazing RP. Imaging getting so fed up with small town politics that you and your boys, let's say 12 of you or so, just up and leave and start your own settlement with your own rules.

My only suggestion to the housing: let players request housing to be added across the map.  If there's somebody who has the financial means to start a ranch on the other side of the state, and a home is available, why deny them that?  With dynamic housing, it'll be easy enough for admins to help them out.

that'd actually be cool.  script a town or two, and let ppl / groups populate the rest of the map

The area Nervous put up is exactly what I was hoping for in my post, extremely in favor of the variety it adds while still keeping it limited.

To be fair, I find the outlined area as a good start for scripted buildings and stores. It allows for a bit of everything, though it would be cool to have Annesburg included too.

-EDIT-

Reason Annesburg would be cool, is that it is a small industrial town and it has a lot of small cottages which would be very cheap housing, as where Saint Denis which is also an industrial town has far more nicer districts and areas, which means there's fewer cheap cottages.

Which is why we should also make a "meet-up" rule in my opinion. If two players are aware of each other and know each other or have had interactions, it should be allowed to poke them on Discord and say "Hey, we both frequent this area, are you gonna be on tonight and are you gonna be able to RP?" - I know it might seem a bit MG'y, but honestly that'd solve a lot of the early days problems. Also, I do apologize if I went off topic, if needed I will post it as a suggestion.

I mean... It's not like people don't do that already in GTAW, lol. Factions are full of pings that are like "HEY BOYS WE'RE DOING STUFF GET ON MEET AT SO AND SO".

And I'd say start slow, code in the core areas such as West Elizabeth, maybe Valentine, Strawberry, and Blackwater. Then slowly expand from there, allow people RP in their Sandy shores area and give a few stores down the line, when everybody and the server is established. I want to have a character who isn't required to go into the big city for stuff, unless it's gambling. And if we have one or two towns in the same region coded, people who are wanted or don't have a good reputation are going to have trouble.

Say a man robs a poker game, he can't exactly go out, get food and stuff from other towns, or sell, because only two places are coded and they're in the same area.

Tbf, I think Nervous map is a strong start. It offers a bit of everything, from city living to the opportunity of small city living, from Saint Denis to Valentine and Strawberry plus the territories between. That offers everything from the swamps to the mountainside living.

We also plan on allowing people to put "permanent" camps and will have to take care of it (bringing back wood, food etc), so on top of housing you'll be able to deploy tents & stuff in the wild.

This is perfect. I think if you're going to do this you can safely open the whole map up. Are you going to have the wild animals in game as well? Because I think it would be a necessity to have them if someone say wanted to RP something like a fur trapper or what have you. It was a big business back then.

Wild animals will be a big priority of the development team for release if it's not directly included in RageMP.

This is the correct answer. This was the one thing I was wondering if would be priority, and I think it'll hinge a lot of people playing. Hope it comes with the RageMP pack or is pretty easy to get done. Good deal either way.

Will cores also be included? So people will need to eat, drink, and maybe smoke to keep all their cores maintained?

ideally i'd want to see something like this;

spacer.png

a good mix of the snowy forests that is the grizzlies west, the blazing hot plains of rhodes, the thriving city of saint denis and more traditional western settlements like valentine

I like this, a bit of everything, shame we can't have Tumbleweed or Armadillo with it.

As long as snow is included that'd be great, in addition to it being combined with the mechanic of being able to create camps/ other small settlements
